Clara travels with her mother, middle-aged, middle-class Mrs. Johnson, who opposes the affair for reasons gradually revealed as the story unfolds. Torn between protecting her vulnerable daughter and allowing her the chance for happiness, Mrs. Johnson lovingly navigates her internal conflict. Adam Guettel, grandson of Richard Rodgers, gives us convincingly ordinary characters who find extraordinary self-expression in song.
